Communities of the Valley

Communities of the Valley is a new UC Merced series made possible by a generous gift from Tony Coelho. This event series will explore the impact of communities that have helped shape the San Joaquin Valley’s economic, civic, and institutional development.

The series brings together community members, leaders, scholars, and UC Merced faculty for programs focused on migration, settlement, agriculture, faith, enterprise, community-building, and civic life. Each event is designed to create a deeper understanding of the histories, contributions, institutions, and priorities of communities with long-standing ties to the Valley.

The pilot year will focus on three communities whose histories are deeply connected to the region: the Dutch American, Hmong, and Punjabi Sikh communities.
